The Society

China Primatological Society (CPS) is a national, non-profit, academic organization, aiming to improve primate research and conservation in China and to improve international research cooperation between Chinese and international scholars. It was established on the basis of Primatological Specialist Group (PSG) which belong to Mammal Society of China. Primatological study in China gradually developed after 1949, and in December, 1981, China Institute of Zoology and Mammalogical Society of China held the first national academic symposium on Primatology in Kunming in 1989, China. This symposium signified the independence of Primatology as a research discipline in the country and assembled PSG. PSG has held annual meeting from 1995 to now, as well as successfully hosted several international primatological conferences, including the 19th International Primatological Society Congress in 2002, Beijing. These activities have improved the academic influence of China’s primatological research in the world. PSG has strengthened its connection with International Primatological Society (IPS) and other thirteen affiliative societies of IPS. Chinese primatological research and conservation developed rapidly in the 21 century, with increasing research fields, increasing number of research teams and increasing frequency of academic exchanges.

To improve Chinese Primatological research and conservation, all members of PSG have agreed to promote PSG as China Primatological Society in 2013. Mammalogical Society of China approved the application of PSG in January, 2014. The Northwest University, the Shaanxi Institute of Zoology, and the Shaanxi Society of Zoology Sciences helped to established CPS. CPS continually held annual meeting, the first meeting at Foping National Nature Reserve, Shaanxi province, 12-14 October, 2014 and second meeting at Shangri-laYunnan, 12-14 October, 2015. CPS makes a new era of China’s primatological study.

CPS formally became the fourteenth affiliative societies of IPS in 2014. Professor Tetsuro Matsuzawa, the IPS president, announced CPS as one of affiliative societies of IPS in the 25thInternational Primatological Society Congresses (2014 Hanoi, Vietnam) and issued certification letter from IPS. As a member in IPS, CPS will actively participate in the decision making process of international society and promote primatological research and conservation in the world.
